Below is the rationale and advice to users that we discussed today.

Rationale

MPI libraries may have implementation specific mechanisms (e.g.,
environment variables) that control the supported memory allocation kinds.
The implementation-defined behavior of “default” provides compatibility
with such mechanisms.

Advice to Users

Applications are encouraged not to rely on the implementation-defined
behavior of the “default” memory allocation kind.
