Not in the Fortran standard. I am sure you've read most of it. Tell me 
where there is a provision for "do as you please" or "you are on your 
own". The very first few pages say, "If the standard does not interpret 
the program, it is illegal", or something along those lines.

Standardization is about much more than syntax. It is, in fact, much 
more about semantics. Leaving the semantics undefined is never OK, IMNSHO.

Infinitely better. I would prefer them only in BIND(C) interfaces, but 
for legacy codes I can see the value in not requiring BIND(C).
