I had asked some application developers who work on a C++ application,
but use C bindings, whether they'd care if the C++ bindings are dropped.
They initially freaked out totally, because they didn't really
understand what this meant. They assumed they were using C++ bindings,
since their program was written in C++.

Maybe the above question should clarify a bit. You could add an example
saying MPI_Send() is a C binding function, while MPI::Comm::Send() is a
C++ binding function.
