May I introduce for your reading pleasure ticket #408 (for MPI-4.0 -- not 3.0 errata/3.1), which formally deprecates the mpif.h interface, and freezes the mpi module:

    https://svn.mpi-forum.org/trac/mpi-forum-web/ticket/408

The Language Bindings Working Group would like to formally read this ticket at the March 2014 meeting in Chicago.

The central idea is that the mpif.h and mpi modules have significant limitations based on prior Fortran designs. Let's stop having "What about Fortran?" moments in the Forum -- let's move forward with the most modern version of Fortran (the mpi_f08 module).

And just to emphasize this point: this is an MPI 4.0 ticket. It is not intended as MPI 3.0 errata and/or MPI 3.1.
